Research notes: the mill photograph

A public evidence ledger, reviewed 20 October 2026. Private correspondence and contact details are omitted.

Evidence ledger

Kind What it supports Limit
Direct observation Long three-story building, central tower, posed group, French publisher imprint Does not date or identify the pictured block by itself
LOC-authored description J. A. French; published in Keene; circa 1870; stereo card Date provisional; publisher location is not the building’s location
Repository identification Kathy Schillemat of HSCC identifies Homestead Woolen Mill, Swanzey, 20 October 2026 Accepted as an attributed repository identification; reported duplicate still uninspected
Repository physical inspection In her reply dated 19 October 2026, Michelle L. Smiley at LOC reports no information on the reverse and no additional dating evidence Does not independently identify the building
Reported collection holdings HSCC reports a duplicate and additional views Duplicate, labels and accession record await inspection
Repository submission Identification submitted to LOC for consideration No catalogue amendment confirmed

Reproducible next steps

  1. Open the original LOC record and Library-authored Flickr post. Preserve the distinction between creator, publication place, title and approximate date.
  2. With HSCC’s permission, inspect the duplicate and its accession documentation. Record labels verbatim, alongside who supplied the identification and when.
  3. Compare fixed architectural features across the additional views. Keep the comparison sources and dates explicit.
  4. Consult local maps and property or mill records for the pictured block’s date and use. Do not inherit a dam date or a later company history as the building’s construction date.
  5. Reopen LOC’s current record before reporting any catalogue change.

Unsuccessful shortcuts

The tower does not independently establish a church. The publisher’s Keene address does not place the building in Keene. Public architectural suggestions are leads, not a documented series of eliminated candidates. The recorded comparison found that three later dealer scans (one, two, three) reproduced the same photograph, rather than independent matches. Twenty-four further images in NHHS’s second and third Swanzey galleries supplied no captioned matching view. No paid scans or further research were commissioned. These are bounded negative results, not an exhaustive search of physical collections.

Repository responses

Katharine (Kathy) Schillemat, Office Manager at the Historical Society of Cheshire County, supplied the identification on 20 October 2026. HSCC reported holding a duplicate and additional views; neither those materials nor their accession information was supplied for inspection. Michelle L. Smiley, Curator of Photography at LOC, reported her physical-card check in a reply dated 19 October. The replies are preserved privately and summarized here. The public records and image comparisons can be retraced through the links; the repository identification remains attributed evidence whose supporting holdings await inspection.

Source access and rights

The complete LOC JPEG was inspected. The main catalogue was blocked during the current check; the Library’s own Flickr description supplied the verified public metadata. It states “No known restrictions on publication.” The site uses that source image without generated enhancement.

Review history

20 October 2026: Public ledger created from the accepted HSCC identification and current public source check. Original case records and correspondence were subsequently checked before publication. HSCC’s comparison material remained unprovided and uninspected.

20 October 2026, prepublication update: Added Michelle L. Smiley’s report, in her reply of 19 October, that she found no information on the reverse.

20 October 2026, publication: Public ledger released with the case report.

20 October 2026, copy edit: Clarified that 19 October dates Smiley’s reply, added direct comparison links and consolidated the correspondence summary. No finding or status changed.
