Research notes: the Iowa cavalry diary

The evidence for a probable Johnston attribution, with source dependence and remaining checks stated.

This ledger accompanies The home he dreamed of. It concerns the notebook’s main narrative; the accounts, verses and inscriptions are not all securely attributed to the same hand.

Evidence ledger

Kind Observation or source What it supports Limit
Manuscript observation Repeated Company L visits and named comrades Company L, 3rd Iowa Cavalry affiliation A company network does not name an individual
Manuscript observation November 17 entry records a detail as H.S. for the 32nd Iowa A distinctive medical assignment Month/year reconstructed from surrounding entries; no named detail order recovered
Manuscript observation December 26 letter to Miss Frankie B; January 9 dream involving Wm Burns and Frankie Separate correspondence and personal clues Dream is not a real visit; Frankie’s full name and relationship to the householder are unstated
Named retrospective source Johnston biography, 1887, printed p. 627 The same unusual duty and a reported marriage to Frances Burns, daughter of William The named hospital detail and exact marriage date still rest on this account; informant unknown; dates contain discrepancies
Military compilation Iowa roster, vol. 4, p. 533 Johnston as Company L bugler, enlistment and muster-out Does not identify this diary
Residence/service bridge 1886 veterans’ list, p. 184 Richard H. Johnson, bugler, Company L, Third Cavalry, Cromwell Assessment-derived compilation, with acknowledged errors
Directory and censuses 1876 directory; original 1860, 1870, 1880 census pages Physician identity, surname variation, residence and household Do not independently establish the hospital detail, Frances’s maiden name or diary authorship
Original census William Burns household, Garden Grove, 1860; entry transcribed as Frances S. Burns, 14, Ohio A local household matching the biography’s William/Frances names and the later wife’s age, initial and birthplace No relationship column; the entry is marked male in the original. Identity with Johnston’s wife and the diary’s Frankie remains inferred
Record index FamilySearch index to Arthur Matt Johnston’s 1890 birth, certificate 141 Parents named Richard Hargrave Johnston and Frances Susannah Burns; independent indexed support for the Burns name Original birth image unavailable in that viewer; index does not identify the diarist or Frances’s father
Original pension index card Richard H. Johnston, Company L, 3rd Iowa Cavalry, with widow Frances S. Johnston Soldier/widow claims and specific files to seek Applications and certificates themselves uninspected; no handwriting or hospital-detail evidence from their contents is claimed

Primary manuscript locators

Source: Butler Center for Arkansas Studies, Central Arkansas Library System, BC.MSS.11.24. Seventy digital images were recovered in the underlying investigation. They are not seventy separate physical pages. The catalogue labels overlap in places; cite image, side and entry date. Physical collation and the number of writers remain unresolved.

New family records and file leads

Another candidate to check is the person transcribed as Francis A. Burns, 15, in John D. Burns’s household in Pam Shelton-Anderson’s 1856 Garden Grove state census transcription. The original schedule has not been inspected for this update. Frankie’s shortened name alone would not distinguish the two candidates.

Corrections retained

The earlier OCR search missed Johnston’s two-column biography. Reading it changed the attribution from a weaker lead to the present probable identification. Earlier diary references had also misassigned some late images: ending 298; Doctor Dick 300; friend Dick 301; red-pencil verse 302; faint end inscription 304. These are digital IDs, not physical page numbers.

Quotations normalize line breaks and superscripts. “Wm Burns” is the adopted January 9 reading after close inspection; the earlier Berns alternative remains in the research history. The separate January 10–11 dream leaves its woman unnamed. Neither Anna nor Frankie should be inserted into it. No poem or ownership inscription automatically identifies the main writer.

October 23, 2026: Separate census, birth-index and pension-card evidence supersedes the earlier statement that the family comparison depends entirely on the biography. The hospital match and exact reported marriage date still depend on it. Corrected three Archive viewer links that opened the adjacent page, the Johnson household’s family number (1232 to 1252) and the unresolved age reading (now 25). Household membership does not establish Frances’s parentage, and the earlier census’s male sex entry remains unexplained. Authorship remains probable.

Remaining tests

Seek an original named duty order, authenticated letter or handwriting comparator, original birth/marriage and kinship records, and continuation notebook. The pension claims now provide specific files to request; their contents have not been examined. Retain the discharge disagreement (biography October 1864; roster September 19, 1864), county-arrival disagreement (biography 1870; directory 1869), and the distinction between medical work and commissioned rank.

No repository acceptance or catalogue amendment is established. No journal or repository correspondence is reproduced here. Living-family contact research is omitted.

Source checks and image treatment

October 20, 2026: original diary images 257, 274, 278 and biography 627 inspected. The manual, directories, military compilation and census references were checked in the underlying investigation. The biography image is a full-page PDF rendering, with no generated or reconstructed text. The article links to the manuscript images at their repository rather than reproducing them. The lead image is the full 1887 biography page, from the public scan contributed to Internet Archive by Allen County Public Library Genealogy Center.

October 23, 2026: Checked original 1860 census images for the Burns and Johnson households, the 1880 Johnston household, the original pension index card and the available birth-index fields. Corrected roster, veterans’ list and directory pages and the 1856 transcription were also inspected. The original birth image, pension applications, compiled service record and original 1856 census were not inspected. No original birth certificate, pension application or new handwriting comparator has been acquired.

The Butler Center’s reproduction policy requires written permission before publication of collection reproductions. Manuscript images remain at the linked repository. The reproduced biography was published in 1887; the Library of Congress explains the U.S. public-domain basis for pre-1930 published works. This does not imply repository endorsement of the attribution.
